What We’re About

The Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that was formed to create a community between singers and fans of contemporary a cappella music. Volunteers for the organization, called Ambassadors, are tasked with bringing CASA to localized regions (states, districts, etc); their motto is “Think Globally, Act Locally.”  But the a cappella community in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area is massive and ever expanding.  With the popularity of shows like “Glee,”  many kids are now starting contemporary groups in their high schools.  Colleges in the area have 5, 10, even 15 different a cappella groups each. And then there are those graduating college, looking to continue what they had in school, whether casually or professionally.  The sheer volume of a cappella in the area leads to a lot of overlap – groups from DC performing in MD and VA; People living in MD but joining groups based in DC; Some schools, like University of Maryland, College Park, are technically a Maryland school, but is in the DC Metro area.  It seems silly for each CASA Ambassador to work independently of one another – hence The A Cappella Embassy.

The A Cappella Embassy is a place for CASA Ambassadors from MD, DC, and VA to pool their resources to create a stronger, more cohesive community throughout our region.  The Ambassadors of each region – MD, DC, and VA – are appointed by CASA and expected to follow a set of tasks each year.  It is the hope of the Embassy that many of these tasks will become easier to complete with the forming of this organization and the use of this website.

The Embassy doesn’t end with the Ambassadors – that’s only the beginning.  Each Ambassador forms a team of volunteers – Diplomats and Liaisons – to help divide each region in to smaller, more manageable clusters – High School, College, and Post-Collegiate.  Much like the Ambassadors focusing on their own region, each Diplomat and Liaison is able to focus on individual portions of each region and is able to specialize in the knowledge needed for the groups in their scope.

As the a cappella scene expands in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area, CASA and The A Cappella Embassy wants to be there to help it grow and flourish.  The A Cappella Embassy is an organization built by a cappella fans and singers for fans and singers.  If you are passionate about a cappella music and are looking to get involved in the local scene, check out the “Get Involved” page to see how you can be a part of the A Cappella Embassy.  We are excited about the future of our craft and are looking forward to serving this region!
